I just love this place. It's a fabulous old 1930s building with a cage door elevator and all sorts of period detail. The rooms are basic but comfortable. It's clean with good beds (most important) and at least some rooms have a fridge and microwave. The owners could not be more friendly and helpful. This turned out to be a lovely, affordable choice and we would certainly stay here again.
Positive: The owners were so friendly and made me feel extremely welcome! The ambiance is unique and so fun - you feel like you are stepping back in time. The room was clean, comfortable, and the homemade breakfast was AMAZING! I would highly recommend the hotel! Negative: No - I loved being there
The owner is very hospitable! This is where I will stay in the future for hunting trips because of that reason alone, as long as she is the owner. Other than that the Hotel has a very antique feel, and it is something you must experience. It's not too common these days to get that feeling! This would actually be a really good place to host a wedding reception if you got married in the mountains somewhere nearby. I might even go there just to unwind out in the mountains, this is a nice area.
I dont understand some of these negative reviews. I stayed here for one night during my road trip. I needed a place to stay for the night and the owner was friendly and welcoming. The price was amazing as well compared to others around the area. The rooms were clean and comfy and it felt like I was sleeping at home. I would recommend this place to anyone.
We didn't end up staying here because the service was awful. They were rude and hateful when we asked about room pricing. They told us to go down the road and we didn't hesitate. This is no way to do business. Edit- We ended up staying at the Rio Grande Motel. It was wonderful. 5 stars from us on everything. And the price was cheaper than advertised. $85 for the night. A much better choice by far.
We recently spent one night at the Monte Villa hotel in Monte Vista. We are very forgiving considering Covid related issues with a business, but this was just plain bad management. The manager told us at check in about all of the issues, including hard to find employees to run bar/restaurant, supply chain issues, etc. She then told us how to operate the free standing heater in the room. The heater was vented out the glass window (yes, they cut a hole in the window glass). The King size bed barely fit in the room. We asked to be moved immediately due to the loud TV and voices directly across the hall. She moved us about 6 rooms down another small hall way. Ok.....fast forward. No breakfast was available here. The next morning we met a friend in town for breakfast. We knew checkout time was 11am. We went up to our 3rd floor room at 10:20am or so. Our key cards did not work in the door. We were locked out and we had one bag left in the room. We walked down to the office. There was no one to be found, not in the 'Office' and not behind the desk, and no where in the hotel. I called the two different numbers to try to get ahold of the owners. After 5+ phone calls, and a half hour of calling and waiting, the woman called me and said they had gone to Walmart....in Alamosa! She said she didn't have good cell coverage in Alamosa. Hello. They were on their way back to the hotel and it would be 10 minutes. A woman from the Chamber of Commerce office next door was sympathetic to our issue, not something they want to see happen to people visiting their town. As the owner arrived, the situation got worse and the police were called, not by us. We just wanted our bag and to get on with our trip. The owner was belligerent with others and she tried to explain herself to us over and over. We told her that she is responsible for her business/establishment, and she was in the wrong. Three police cars arrived and we explained the situation to them. This owner has no business running a hospitality establishment. This owner never takes responsibility for her actions. Period.
Not sure why Google thinks that I visited this hotel. I never pulled in the parking lot or even parked on the street. I go to Physical Therapy sometimes around the corner on Adams Street. I’ve never been to this place, so I have no idea … But one day I did call for some reason and there was an Asian lady who answered the phone. It was hard to understand what they were saying exactly and I never stayed there so I don’t really know why it showed up on my Google but whatever I’ll leave them a review. There’s only a couple options in Monte Vista anyway and this might be a good place to stay. I’m not sure.
The service of this hotel is outstanding. I made a mistake and booked the room for the next day but they took care of me anyway, allowing me to take the last room they available. I drove for over 5 hours and thanks to Google I ended up driving over 15 miles of unpaved roads and mud, to say I was exhausted is the understatement of the year.
I am really thankful for the lady that runs this place.
The room was very clean which is the most important thing to me, if you have any experience with European motels you will not find the rooms small, hell, the room I got last time I went to San Francisco was much smaller. I still think the fact there was a fridge inside the room is amazing for the price.
I will never forget this crazy night that ended on a very positive note thanks to the staff of this hotel. Thank you very much.

On the other hand, there are a few weaknesses mentioned in the comments. One reviewer stated that they encountered rude and hateful service when inquiring about room pricing. The lack of available breakfast, problems with room keys, and the absence of staff during checkout time were all mentioned as negative experiences.
These weaknesses imply a lack of proper management and organization within the hotel. The absence of breakfast and problems with room keys indicate a lack of attention to detail and a failure to meet the needs of guests. In summary, the strengths of the Monte Villa Hotel include the friendly and welcoming owners, the unique ambiance, the cleanliness of the rooms, and the affordability of the accommodations. However, there are weaknesses in terms of service, management, and organization that need to be addressed in order to provide a consistently positive experience for guests. Improvements in these areas would enhance the overall reputation and satisfaction of guests staying at the hotel.
