A smashing little bakery. Always busy. The prices are so cheap. A small area to sit and also a toilet at the rear of the cafe, this could have done with a once over, the floor was dirty and no toilet roll. Two cups of tea for £2.40 . The cakes are beautiful. They also sell hot roast meat sandwiches, hot soup, toasted teacake and a selection of pies, pasties and sausage rolls.
My husband called in today to pick up lunch for a picnic in the park. He had placed 2 cans of drink on the counter, asked for a meat pie, cornish pasty and large sausage roll. These were bagged up and placed on the counter in front of him. He then asked if he could have a couple of bread rolls. He was then very rudly told "no, we can't sell you bread rolls as we make sandwiches". My husband replied "I would like to use the bread rolls to make a sandwich with the pies I am buying from you". "No, I can't do it" came the blunt response from the battle axe who was serving. What kind of bakers, with a large sign outside that states they sell "bread", is unable to sell a bread roll to a customer through fear that the sandwich they make with said bread will prevent the customer from potentially purchasing a sandwich when they are already intending to purchase 3 hot pastries/pies?? Absolutely flabbergasted at the attitude of staff here. My husband would have been happy to pay an inflated price for the "privilege" of being sold bread from a bakers however, apparently, this bakers doesn't sell bread, despite bread being advertised as they sell "sandwiches". Many, many bakers sell both bread and sandwiches. Unfortunately, not this one. Consequently, my husband suggested the "lady" serving put back the food ordered as it was no longer required. Instead, we went to Tesco express next door, purchased a delicious fresh loaf of bread, butter, sandwich fillings, pastries and drinks for a fraction of the price of this money grabbing sandwich shop and was served with a smile. Having read other reviews, namely one in which a customer requested a cake be cut into 2, or a knife to do so, when dining in, and was refused - it is easy to see the mentality of the older generation staff here who are so bitter they can't even "allow" one of their cakes to be shared. Never known anything like it. Would rather eat seagull droppings scraped off the floor than recommended this place.
Bakes & Cakes is a great little bakery situated in the in the heart of St. Anne's mainstream. With a small indoor cafe & a large outdoor seating area, this bakery offers a huge choice of sandwiches, baguettes, barm cakes, toasties, pastries, breakfast choices, soups, cakes, hot & cold drinks, etc. All very reasonably priced! The staff are efficient & friendly and give very good service. Their is a washroom located to the back of the cafe, unfortunately their is no disabled access to the washroom due to the the indoor cafe area being quite small. Disabled access is available to the main bakery itself & to the outdoor seating area. Their is a specials board outside the front of the store with daily specials. Takeaway is available also.
Opening times are as follows;
Monday-Saturday
7:30am-5pm
Sunday

Definitely worth a visit! Food & drinks are exceptionally good!
I gave this place a try, as noticed the place was always busy. Quite a stern and frosty reception from the older staff towards the customers. Really quite unwelcoming to be honest. I was served by a younger person, who was far more receptive than the man next to her serving another lady. I believe he might be the owner. I felt this establishment to be a truly unfriendly and hostile place.
Anyways, I bought some tiny bread loaves, and a pie and a pasty. The savoury products were piping hot. The pasty was simply ok. The pie was really bad. The breads were so bad they went in the bin. Absolutely horrible flavour and texture. Not a patch on even a simple chain such as Greggs. Tesco fresh bakery is so much better.
Wasted cash.
Actually visited twice yesterday, coffee and cakes at 11 and the sandwich and pies for lunch must have increased my waist size a few inches. May I say the bavarian slices were exceptional. My wife and I met when we were apprentice bakes in 1971 and my wife's job was to make bavarian slices. In all the years past we have never found any to come close.. until now well done to the baker
Quite nice cakes but rather expensive (£1.80 for most items(even a single donut)) and less options than other bakeries. Good service though. No queueing or waiting and polite staff
There’s a great selection of pastries and the prices are reasonable. It’s quite a small place but there’s usually room to sit inside. There’s only one small toilet.
Very rude member of staff asked for a large custard got told weve not got one even though you.could see it.She even started moaning when i pointed out where it was and that it was in the wrong place very unproffessional but i wont be returning to get spoke down to.
